Cooking shuwa in the tanoor is one of Oman’s most treasured traditions — a slow-cooked, wood-fired masterpiece that brings families together during Eid and winter gatherings. But as the season approaches, it’s important to remember that even the most beloved customs deserve a few modern safety measures.

The Royal Oman Police (ROP) and the Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority (CDAA) have recently issued public safety warnings, urging everyone to take extra care when using open shuwa pits and barbecue grills — especially in homes, camps, and public parks.

To support Oman barbecue shuwa safety, the CDAA advises:

• Keep grills and fires away from flammable materials

• Avoid using grills in enclosed or poorly ventilated areas

• Always supervise children around cooking equipment

• Extinguish charcoal completely after use

• Never dispose of hot coals directly into bins

• Do not light fires inside tents

• Store fuel and flammable liquids safely and out of children’s reach

• Use flashlights instead of open flames inside tents

• Keep a fire extinguisher or a sand bucket nearby when cooking outdoors
